NARRATION INTRODUCTION: Volunteer work is something that can make a community thrive. In college, however, there’s so little time to spare that some students can barely even make time to sleep. There are a precious few students who choose to donate their weekend time to bettering the community even if they only have a few hours to spare. Allaire Gehm is a junior education major at Winthrop and she spends every Saturday afternoon at Petsmart’s adoption day with operation care that she is hugely passionate about
VOLUNTEER SOUND BITE: The people who run operation care take these animals in off the street. They feed them, they train them, they help them work through any emotional or physical torment or torture that they’ve gone through, they pick out people to house the animals because they can’t take all of them.
NARRATION: The group is run by two women who load the animals up in their trucks every Saturday morning just in the hopes that someone will give them a home. Allaire is not a part of any on campus organization; on the contrary, she chooses to donate her time just because she truly believes in the cause.
VOLUNTEER SOUND BITE: Yes I do go over on Saturdays because those kitties and those puppies they’re so cute they just melt my heart so if I can go and give some love to some kitties or puppies who don’t get that on a regular basis I think that’s helping those animals because really love helps anybody.
NARRATION: Allaire says that she’s seen friends of hers that only choose to volunteer as a part of their sorority or school group and thinks that it used as an excuse sometimes not to help out in the community.
VOLUNTEER SOUND BITE: I mean, I think that they just make that an excuse and say oh well, they’re doing good so that’s why I like my sorority or fraternity. But I’m sorry; you don’t have to be in one of those to do volunteer work. You can just volunteer for the heck of it.
CONCLUSION: Regardless of time limitations, or school expectations, Allaire says that she will continue to devote her Saturdays to the cause just on the chance of finding these animals a permanent place to live.
VOLUNTEER CLOSING SOUND BITE: There are so many animals out there that are homeless and wandering the streets, so that’s why I like operation care.
